Nobel Prize in Gymnastics arriving soon
OKLAHOMA CITY (USA) - LAUSANNE (SUI), February 27, 2009: The traditional Induction Ceremony of the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame will take place on May 30 in Oklahoma City (USA). Four gymnasts will be honoured during this 13th edition: Dominique Dawes (USA), Elvira Saadi (UZB), Viktor Chukarin (UKR), Vitaly Scherbo (BLR) and the coach Octavian Bellu (ROU). The 2009 International Order of Merit will be awarded to Margaret Sikkens Ahlquist (SWE), the President of the FIG Gymnastics for All Committee. Set up in 1996, this Institution organises every year a Gala Ceremony to award five trophies and one diploma to gymnasts or prominent individuals who have had an extraordinary impact on the sport of gymnastics. The gymnastics world considers these internationally recognized awards as true Nobel Prizes in gymnastics. They have already been awarded to a whole rang of legends in gymnastics and several personalities such as FIG President, Prof. Bruno Grandi, and former Secretary General Norbert Bueche. 2009 underlines the outstanding career of Dominique Dawes (Olympic champion by team in Atlanta 96) and Viktor Chukarin (Olympic champion in Helsinki 1952 and Melbourne 1956). Besides, it honours the gymnast Vitaly Scherbo who still holds the absolute record of Olympic titles won during the same Games (six gold medals at the OG 1992 in Barcelona). Last but not least, it brings to light the huge contribution made by Rumanian coach Octavian Bellu, one of the most successful in the circuit. The International Order of Merit awarded to Margaret Sikkens Ahlquist is an acknowledgement of the talent and work of the boss of Gymnastics for All and especially of her contribution in favour of millions of anonymous gymnasts worldwide whose well being and development depend greatly on the participation in sports. Mrs. Sikkens Ahlquist is also a member of the International Olympic Committee Sports for All Commission; she is about to launch a new sports event called Gym for Life Challenge wrapped up in a new international formula of interclub meeting. The very first edition will take place in July 2009 in Dornbirn, Austria. It will crown the victory of the best gymnastics club in the world. The Board of Directors of the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame is chaired by Frank Bare under the presidency of Bart Conner. Paul Ziert is the CEO.
First Gym For Life Challenge
Dornbirn (AUT) - Lausanne (SUI) FIG Office, Feb. 26, 2009: With nearly 1800 gymnasts registered out of 26 countries, the 1st Gym for Life Challenge (July 15-19, 2009 in Dornbirn / Austria) is arising a huge interest worldwide. FIG and Dornbirn organizers met recently in order to clarify several issues and prepare more specifically the sports contests.
By the 1st deadline set out on Feb. 10, 65 groups with up to 20 gymnasts and 23 groups with more than 20 gymnasts had registered (the biggest group is made of 55 members). We can therefore anticipate a colourful event with dance, acrobatics, aerobics and apparatus gymnastics productions. Worth mentioning the fact that most groups are mixed in age and that children and youngsters (up to 16) make up nearly 20 groups.sportska gimnastika
The most popular productions are the shows which will take place in Hall 1 in the Festival territory as well as productions on the scene in Dornbirn market place to which 43 groups have registered to date. But everything stays open since Austrian clubs have not registered yet. 200 gymnasts members of the Vorarlberg gymnastics club will take part to the Opening Ceremony, the choreography of which is made by Britta Hafner (TS Hohenems). As regards the Award Ceremonies for the gold, silver and bronze medals, they will take place in Hall 6 on July 16 and 17.
Mass sport in strength „We are pleased to see how interested people are, but what strikes me most is the high number of nations represented », explained a very satisfied Margaret Sikkens-Ahlquist, the President of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) Gymnastics for All Committee. She added: „This interest proves not only that there was a need for a mass sport event to be organised in the form of a contest but also that the FIG must be more present to world events like the World Gymnaestrada or the Gym for Life Challenge “.
Gimnasticki klub pobednik vrsi upis novih clanova gimnastika za decu Praised by the IOC 2 000 gymnasts from more than 20 nations will stay from July 15 to 19 in Dornbirn, the place which successfully staged the 2007 World Gymnaestrada, in order to try and get a gold, silver or bronze medal. This event is not a “competition” but a “contest” organised around gymnastics group productions with choreography. Besides, the International Olympic Committee was filled with interest and admiration for the Gym for Life Challenge concept presented to it in Kuala Lumpur.
Najbolji treninzi sportske gimnastike u Srbiji „A fair and simple evaluation“ The preparatory meeting was dedicated first and foremost to the Opening Ceremony (with show) due to take place on July 15 as well as to the evaluation system. Several nations, such as the Scandinavian countries, Germany or Switzerland, are already familiar with this contest system, but it remains unusual to most countries. “We do our best to try and guarantee an evaluation as fair and simple as possible”, explained Margaret Sikkens-Ahlquist. The evaluation will be conducted by eight specialists but also by several experienced experts representing the national federations. The “golden” groups – between 12 and 15 – shall take part to the final Gala on July 18 which will designate the “Group of the Year”.
As regards the organisation, the 1st Gym for Life Challenge is ready: the halls where the events will take place are already in place and the school accommodation is ready. Besides, the World Gymnaestrada fever has not fallen off on and many experts and voluntary people are still available.
Premier Gym for Life Challenge
DORNBIRN (AUT) - LAUSANNE (SUI), FIG Office, February 10, 2009: Just five months prior to the premier Gym For Life Challenge kick-off, organisers are forecasting the participation of some 1, 800 gymnasts from 20 countries. Margaret Sikkens Ahlquist (SWE), President of the Gymnastics for All Committee, feels that this goes far beyond any expectations they may have had. A delegation of the committee met with the Austrian organisers in Dornbirn to go over preparation for the event.
The national federations have more than proven their interest in an event of this kind, registering a total of 70 groups, all of which will be presenting their routines to a college of authorities for evaluation. The top 15 groups will qualify for a Gala on July 18th, at the close of which a Gold medal will designate one winning group as the, “Group of the Year”!
The FIG presented the contest at the International Olympic Committee’s recent Sport for All Congress in Kuala Lumpur (MAS). Both the FIG’s project and President Sikkens Ahlquist received a positive reaction from participants. “We will set up a simple and effective method of evaluation to be used by 8 authorities and a handful of specialists from the national federations, ” affirmed Ms Sikkens Ahlquist.
In terms of organisation, all Gymnastics for All Committee members will be participating and volunteers are aplenty. President Marie-Louise Hinterauer can breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that this premier event for Gymnastics for All in general and the FIG in particular is going to be a global success!

Congratulations and thank you ! Dornbirn (AUT), July 14, 2007: Dornbirn is closing its doors on the world of Gymnastics for All with a heavy heart, but with a warm memory to light the days ahead. The Gymnaestrada is leaving behind an indelible mark on the Vorarlberg region and on the history of the towns that hosted these 56 participating federations.
From the opening ceremony to more than 1, 500 shows on the Gymnaestradas programme and City Performances, to national evenings and the final closing ceremony, this moment in the history of Gymnastics for All has been universal, has demonstrated solidarity and was simply phenomenal.
Above all else, Gymnastics for All is a sport that transcends barriers between the worlds cultures. It sets an example as a foundational sport for humanity as a whole, for any heritage, for any culture.
The Gymnaestrada reached the summits of success and glory in terms of logistic performance, a quality welcome, artistic and technical performance. The volunteers and residents of the Vorarlberg region can be proud of their work. Each overcame obstacles with lightheartedness and smiles. We congratulate and thank them for their commitment and their respect. We admire the body of participants for their passion and vitality. The Gymnaestrada has taken an important position in the world of international sport, draped as it is in robes of universality and solidarity.
After a closing ceremony which proved, for the last time, the professionalism of these Gymnaestrada organisers, we bid farewell to this corner of the world with a heartfelt Au revoir.
Glavne odluke o gimnastici i natjecanjima donosi FIG (Federation Internationale de Gymnastik) u Francuskoj. Ispričavam se zbog greške u prijašnjem postu gdje sam umjesto gimnastičkom slučajno napisala gumnastičkom.
